This weekend is a great time for the super-heroine, because in addition to officially celebrate its 75years, she has been inducted to the UN as Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls!

It is rare, if not generally recommended to give his opinion on social facts when writing for a cultural magazine, focusing around the movies, series, video games, comics, and literature. But sometimes when fiction and real problem bind (for the better, at that!) It is impossible to do otherwise. So forgive in advance this article troublemaker, but it is unthinkable to me to finish my day without talking about it ...

For the induction of Wonder Woman in the UN, the actress Lynda Carter (who played the heroine in the TV series of the 1970s) and Gal Gadot (now actress of Diana Price) have moved to the UN Council, accompanied by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman film director), and the president of DC Entertainment, Diane Nelson. In short, beautiful people was present at the UN Council on Friday.

Obviously learning a fictional character becomes UN ambassador, can make you smile -or grumble. Many people will judge it unnecessary and even totally stupid. But the truth is that there are no miraculous solutions to change the place of women in society, or how they are treated. Educating children is a step forward, punish sexist acts another, but there is no remedy that could transform radically the views. Many associations, many groups campaigning every day to get things done, on small or big scale, and it turns out that, as in any battle, the dissemination of ideas and images remains one of the best assets to get things done. Also, the UN decision is really important. Necessary. Essential. It is not with words that we can transform the world, not with images that we change the engineering fools, but there is nothing stronger, more timeless, and more efficient than an idea, a drawing, a word.

So if my few sentences didn't really convinced or persuaded you, I let you read the UN statement about Wonder Woman, because obviously they explain it better than anyone else :

21 October 2016 - The United Nations has designated Friday superhero character of American comic Wonder Woman Honorary Ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls.

This appointment is part of a campaign in collaboration with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. to raise awareness to the issue of gender equality. Wonder Woman, one of the most iconic super-heroines, will reach new audiences on the objectives of sustainable development and to stimulate action in favor of gender equality and women's empowerment and girls.

"While we have made progress towards gender equality in many parts of the world, women and girls continue to face discrimination and violence. Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world, "said the Secretary-General for Information, Cristina Gallach.

"This campaign is an example of how we are working with various partners and we build new alliances to reach audiences around the world to know and understand the objectives and, in this case, equal equality ", she added.

Building on the strength of Wonder Woman image and his fight for justice and peace, the campaign will focus on efforts in five key areas: to denounce the discrimination and limitations faced by women and girls; unite with others to fight against violence and gender-related abuse; support the full and effective participation and equal opportunities for women and girls in leadership in all areas of life, including the workplace; ensure that all women and girls have access to quality learning; and share examples of women and girls in real life that stand out.

"Supporting the United Nations campaign for the empowerment of women is a heavy responsibility and we are proud to DC and Warner Bros to participate," said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment and president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. "Wonder Woman has always been a pioneer for women's rights and believe that it can continue this legacy by broadening and deepening the dialogue around these critical issues."

The campaign was launched to mark the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of Wonder Woman in a comic strip in 1941. This campaign is part of a series of initiatives taken by the United Nations in the name of gender equality .
