In a series of recently released videos, several people from Capcom who have worked on Resident Evil 7 talk about the development of the game. Fascinating.

Resident Evil 7 was expected. The sixth episode had brought to its paroxysm the frantic action initiated with the fourth episode to the great displeasure of the fans of the first hour. Aware of this loss of identity, Capcom decided to listen to the players. Very early on, the orientation of Resident Evil 7 was fixed : to make a survival horror in a confined place with few characters like a certain... Evil Dead !

The cinematic reference is far from being an incongruity in a saga that owes much to the 7th art. In this case, it is interesting to see how the media was an integral part of the development of the game. Thus, the famous scene of the meal was first shooted with a Go Pro camera filming Capcom staff members playing the role of the Baker family. The process is far from being anecdotal because it is behind the videocassettes reconstructing the events at the origin of the journey of Ethan in Louisiana.

Turning scenes with real people also allowed them to measure their fear potential. It is in this way that the demo Kitchen designed for virtual reality (VR) has been developed. By taking the place of the player, the actor interpreting Ethan could verify, for example, how far from the face the knife of the aggressor was threatening. The developers get it right : Kitchen was a real success during its demonstration at the E3 2015. It is largely responsible for the decision to fully play the game in VR. However, it was not an easy task as we learn from the video "Hell's Kitchen". If the interest of Capcom for the VR dates back to 2012, the producer of the game was skeptical on its potential, and for good reason : he could not stand it!

The development of a Resident Evil is usually no bed of roses. Without reaching the climax of Resident Evil 4 (which, remember, has known no less than five versions), the 7 brought its share of difficulties. Starting with the VR that prevented developers from "cheating" on the perspective or detail of anecdotal objects. The video "Welcome to the family" tells us that the process of creating the character of Jack Baker (with the so-called "Papa" nickname at the time) was complicated (several months) without anyone knowing more.

One could measure the pangs of development in the light of ideas that have been abandoned. Thus, it was foreseen that the dog of the family, who named Diane, intervenes during the scene of the meal. This animal is a central figure in the series, causing one of the most terrible jump scare ever in video game history. However, the developers decide to give it up without explanations. Moreover, the video "Beginning hour" reveals that they have squarely made a cross on... a gameplay component ! Indeed, the player should, originally, manage the breathing of the character during moments of tension. At the passage of a monster, a button allowed to stop breathing in order not to be spotted. Released too early and you were betrayed by the noise. Released too late and you would die of asphyxia. Problem: the players themselves had a tendency to hold their breath ! The idea was therefore giving up to avoid any health risk!

In short, Capcom has succeeded in the challenge of creating a "contemporary masterpiece of survival and horror" in the image, so to speak, of the meticulous work to restore a more realistic sound environment than ever before. The developers will have a lot to do to place the bar even higher with Resident Evil 8 announced in the video "The House that Jack Built".

One more challenge in a saga that does not lack.
