During an interview for Digital Spy, Hugh Jackman explained that Logan would not be part of the X-Men universe we know...

If the X-Men films are really good, we can't deny their big problem is timeline. Indeed, Deadpool also noticed it in his own movie ("Which professor X will I see ? Stewart or McAvoy ? 'Cause de timeline is really fucked up !"). So after the first trilogy, First Class (which, on certain points, doesn't fit with it), Days of Future Past (or, as I like to name it "fuck the timeline"), Apocalypse (in which Logan meets Jean as he's not supposed to be there...), and the three movies focused on Wolverine, we can say we are accustomed to chronological confusion and chaos, in the X-Men universe. So it's not a surprise to hear that Logan, the last film about Wolverine (I hope so, at least), doesn't take place in the same universe as the other films. Explanations.

“And so Jim [Mangold] and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking The Wrestler, Unforgiven. He was thinking Unforgiven as well and The Gauntlet and these other movies which just seemed to really match his character. Early on we had the idea for the title not having anything to do with Wolverine in it, but making this more about the man. And what the collateral damage of being Wolverine your entire life would be.” said Jackman during the interview.

“It’s a standalone movie in many ways,” he added. “It’s not really beholden to timelines and storylines in the other movies. Obviously, Patrick Stewart is in there so we have some crossover, but it feels very different and very fresh.”

He says trying to serve the chess game of the X-Men universe timelines “actually doesn’t help telling a story and it’s sort of been a bit all over the place. I’m not critical of it – X-Men was the first movie really in comic book, no one thought there’d be another and there were different directors and different off shoots.”

“When you see the full movie you’ll understand,” Jackman added about the standalone nature of the film. “Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it’s a slightly different universe. It’s actually a different paradigm and that will become clear.”

Then, we can expect a really good film about the adamantium-claws-man, and, maybe a true cinematic slap, as Jackman promised us a fresher and uncommon movie !
Let's check this in theaters, on March 3rd !
