If director Joss Whedon had decided to leave the "super-hero" universe when Avengers : Age of Ultron wrapped, he said he will be ready to work again with Marvel on a film about.. Black Widow !
At San Diego ComicCon, director Joss Whedon, who was a guest, confessed he would love to make a film about the famous Black Widow, if Marvel asked him to. After Kevin Feige said they have a project about directing a movie on Natascha Romanov, Whedon declared he is really attached to this character and he would like to do a movie on that heroin, played by the great Scarlett Johansson.
“If somebody pointed to me and said, ‘you want to make a Black Widow movie?’ the answer would be ‘Duh.’ For two reasons: I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound and so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your Superman territory it’s harder to maintain that sort of gritty action that the Russo brothers do so beautifully. And she’s got that kind of thing…and really do a spy thriller, really do a good, paranoid sort of John LeCarré on crack sort of thing. Also, Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard, but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot.”
Of course it's not Whedon's official announcement about a Black Widow movie. Plus, a film about that character would be in the fourth phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe, and won't be released before 2020.
Nevertheless, people have different minds about it. Some find Whedon hasn't given importance to this character in the Avengers movies, and it would be strange, and ridiculous for him to direct a film about her. Some think that if Black Widow is not really important in the Avengers, like her friend Hawkeye, it's because Marvel decided to highlight their "main heroes", their most famous characters : Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk. Others admit that a film about Black Widow could be very interesting and would help us to understand that mysterious heroin.
If many criticized Whedon about his declaration, it's necessary to remind that he has always given importance to his female characters through years, and that one of his own personal character is still a symbolic and iconic heroin : Buffy. Plus, in a society where women still have difficulty to be seen as equals to men, we can understand his will to highlight the only female member of the Avengers, and to tell the story of the brilliant Natascha Romanov. It reminds us DC Comics, who recently chose to make a whole film about their Wonder Woman.
We can expect many super-heroins films in the next years, and they could be more badass than their male partners !
